Davidoff Nicaragua Limited Edition Story

10TH Anniversary Celebration cigar

2013. A new era of dynamic flavour begins. For the first time, Davidoff sets out from the Dominican Republic to explore new tobaccos and flavours in the wider world. And thus, the iconic Black Band graces a Davidoff cigar for the first time. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this modern classic, Davidoff's Master Blenders set out anew to explore, adventure and discover, this time to climb to new heights of taste to match Nicaragua’s volcanic peaks.

The result is an experience of another level.

Taste Experience Davidoff Nicaragua Limited Edition – This is Peak Nicaragua

The tobaccos in this Limited Edition have been aged for an incredible total of 45 years.

Adding to the already-aged filler, binder and wrapper, Davidoff's Master Blenders also introduced a 9-year-old Estelí tobacco to the mix for the first time. But still they continued to pursue the extraordinary.

Not content with unearthing a new Nicaraguan variety, they aged the Estelí in rum casks for added depth and distinctiveness. Embarking through notes of roasted nuts, the taste gives way to oak wood and ends intensely with black coffee.

CASK AGEING PROCESS

THE CASK

The leaves are firmly pressed inside the rum casks. As the temperature in the closed casks rises, the tobacco enters a fermentation process. The rise in temperature is checked regularly to prevent the tobacco from overheating.

THE AGEING

The tobacco ages for a total of six months in the cask, during which it gets flipped every two weeks applying a labour-intensive process. Meanwhile, the tobacco absorbs the rum aromas of the cask’s wood. This is a natural process during which no rum is applied to the tobacco leaves directly.

THE RESULT

The cask ageing adds complexity and depth to the flavours. Especially by using a Nicaraguan Estelí seco which had already aged for 9 years before, the cask ageing noticeably refines the overall taste.

Cigar pairing for rum lovers

ANOTHER LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE

Due to the gran toro’s complexity, flavours and its full body, an ideal pairing companion to enhance the experience is a Nicaraguan rum. Its spicy notes and generally less sweet taste complement the cigar’s main aromas of roasted nuts, oak wood and black coffee nicely.

The gran toro cigar, while reminiscent of the existing Nicaragua blend, climbs to new heights of taste and creates an intense experience with a typically Nicaraguan palate stimulation.

Davidoff's Master Blenders pursued new avenues to achieve unprecedented tastes. They selected filler tobaccos that they had never blended in one cigar before. Additionally, they put a special emphasis on the ageing of the tobaccos for this cigar: The wrapper, binder and filler tobaccos combined have a total age of 45 years.

Another special feature of the gran toro is the Estelí seco filler tobacco, which was aged in rum casks for a full 6 months – a first for Davidoff. This creates a very noticeable depth and complexity.

The 12 gran toro cigars come in a wooden box which displays the carefully varnished Nicaragua pattern.

What makes the Signature, Grand Cru, Aniversario and Millennium lines so different is the fact that they are all blended out of the same three main tobaccos (Olor Dominicano, Dominican San Vicente and Dominican Piloto) that were picked at different grades and also appear in different ratios in the blends.

This means each line delivers its own unique intense combination of aromas. A commonality is that they all stimulate all areas of the palate evenly.
